redemption way

Redemption Way

Redemption way is a piece inspired by struggles and uncertainty's. the way seems tough, and there's obstacles in the way, and in the distance there's light - there's change, there's a hand reaching out to lead you. it was a reactionary piece to the hurricane katrina in the states and the images form there provoked me to paint this.

trig point, Arthur's Pass New Zealand

Trig Point, Arthur's Pass New Zealand

Trig points are fairly popular on hikes in new zealand. having lived there for 2 years i really enjoyed the hiking and the landscape of the country. the trig point is the highest point on the mountain so it was meaningful and well as a resting point at the top of the hike! the box underneath is a 'intentions' box, meant if that you were going out for a few days you could leave you intentions if you ran into trouble you could be traced.although this piece is still in new zealand , prints of it are available - please ask.regards, steffan

robin

Robin

This a piece using charcoal to paint with, plus a whole host of other mark making techniques, ink washes etc. hope you enjoy my art feel free to browse around my other pieces.this isn't for sale as it's already sold. but if you contact me i can arrange prints of this piece. no probs.regards, steffps. here's some blurb about robins... :dthe robin is one of the few birds that hold a territory all year round. in summer a territory is defended by a mated pair, while each bird holds individual winter territories. breeding territories average 0.55ha in size about six would fit onto an average sized football pitch while winter territories are around half of this. the exact size depends on the quality of habitat and the density of birds in the area. in some areas, such as scottish pinewoods with well-spaced, mature trees and few shrubs, breeding densities can be as low as 10 pairs/sq km, while a lowland woodland can support as many as 200-300 pairs/sq km. territory boundaries are fluid, and change frequently as circumstances change.the possession of a good territory is a key to survival. a territory gives each robin exclusive food supplies all year. any bird unable to secure a territory is doomed to die of starvation, so there is a strong incentive for each robin to carve out a patch. in some cases, territory defence results in a fight, and it is not unusual for one of the birds to die of its injuries. in some populations, up to 10% of adult mortality is accounted for by territorial disputes. the sole purpose of a robin's red breast is in territory defence: it is not used in courtship. a patch of red triggers territorial behaviour, and robins are known to persistently attack stuffed robins and even tufts of red feathers.

wood pigeon

Wood Pigeon

In series of british birds, i've taken coffee stained and energetic emotive splashwork to create a strong composition of our common british bird life. this is a framed piece. feel free to ask more question.steffps. here's some blurb from the rspb website on our favorite wood pigeon : the uk's largest and commonest pigeon, it is largely grey with a white neck patch and white wing patches, clearly visible in flight. although shy in the countryside it can be tame and approachable in towns and cities. its cooing call is a familiar sound in woodlands as is the loud clatter of its wings when it flies away.

skylark

Skylark

The skylark (alauda arvensis) is a small passerinebird species. this lark breeds across most of europe and asia and in the mountains of north africa. it is mainly resident in the west of its range, but eastern populations are more migratory, moving further south in winter. even in the milder west of its range, many birds move to lowlands and the coast in winter. asian birds appear as vagrants in alaska; this bird has also been introduced in hawaii and western north america.(unframed but can be framed on request)

sheep picnic, machen mountain

Sheep Picnic, Machen Mountain

This was taken from a photograph one late afternoon on machen mountain. the sun was quietly going down and the sheep were happy grazing among the newly cut down trees in the field. these sheep seemed somewhat amused at me taking photos of them chewing away. i called it 'sheep picnic' as they seemed to be just enjoying the moment with not a care in the world and a field full of grass to chew on.this work has been shortlisted for the 'kyffin williams drawing prize 2009'. http://www.kyffinwilliams.info/eng/index.html

Stranger In A Bottle

This is a detail of a painting in oil colours that i have started as part of a study of still life around the subject of reflections and identity. i chose the glass and bottle as to use this in creating reflections off of each other. its now hanging in a gallery in cardiff.

steffan johnson

Hi ,My name is steffan johnson, I'm from wales, near a place called caerphilly. I love to paint and raw and am in the process of relearning skills and tricks and tips I didn't get taught in art school. Funny as it may seem, techiques and basics wheren't the focus of what I was mostly taught in University, so I've set about trying to relaern and graft at what painters have done for years, and that is to study the art of drawing and painting. Form, shade and light, etc etc are key things I am interested to learn and know, so heres a little selection of work I've done, most of it fairly recent. Hope you enjoy looking at it. I am open for commisions of all sorts - so if you have a still life set up you like or want somebody to paint let us know I'd be happy to paint it. Or anything for that matter - abstract, traditional or contemporary, I'd be well up for giving it a go.

regards,Steff
