Lady Astor From Topolski's Chronicles

Lady Astor from Topolski's Chronicles

About this Artwork

Topolski's Chronicles were generally published fortnightly, for circulation amongst the one thousand subscribers, which entailed a worldwide delivery to schools, universities and museums as well as individuals. It covered international events, in the manner of the war reportage generated by Topolski as a war artist with the Allied Forces in the Second World War. It was produced by Topolski on his own printing press at the studio, between 1953 and 1967, continuing into the 1970s as a centre-spread within Quarto magazine, an intellectual and arts-based magazine edited by Richard Boston. In the early 1980s Sandy Nairn curated an exhibition of The Chronicle at the ICA, and its latest incarnation is on permanent view here, in the form of the Topolski Century mural which Topolski worked on for the last fourteen years of his life. The mural stands 600 ft long and 20 ft high and represents a compilation of the images and themes which span The Chronicle.
