Wild loch

Painted in acrylics on box canvas size 16" x 16"x 1.5" deep.

The painting is of a Scottish loch as night falls and the wind starts stirring up the water which breaks against the rock.

Full of atmosphere and textures the painting captures the contrasting light and shade of rocks and sky.The work continues round sides of canvas.Doesn't need frame.

I paint in oils on canvas or board.My style is realism. Subjects I find particularly interesting are rustic buildings and doors in various degrees of dilapidation such as peeling paint,flaking plaster and rotting timber.

I first developed a strong interest in art at the age of fourteen. I started visiting local galleries and became fascinated by the work of the Pre-Raphaelites,L.S Lowry and Paul Nash. I also visited an exhibition by Boyd and Evans which introduced me to photorealism which influenced my own work. I am a self taught artist,learning my brush skills by painting pastiches or copies of classical old marine paintings which gave me a grounding in painting fine detail such as rigging and cloud formations,and scumbling,layering colours for seascapes.I have exhibited my work at Stockport open exhibition. I use oil paint in my art which I blend with a medium such as liquin which enables me to use a water colour brush to achieve very fine detail.This way I can paint grain pattern in wood or texture on bark to great effect. I love to capture the character that develops over time through wear and tear in buildings and other man made features, or the natural ageing or decomposition of trees with their broken branches and moss covered bark. Textures appeal to me greatly,such as stonework,pebbles and sand. I try to capture the atmoshere and essence of my subject matter in as realistic a way as I can through accurate observation of colour,light,and detail. My subject matter varies from photos of buildings and scenery taken on trips abroad,to local sites close to home.
